After a long winter, I think we’re all ready for the arrival of spring. Not only does spring bring longer days and warmer weather, it’s also the perfect time to breathe new life into your home. Changes such as a new colour scheme, a functional floor plan, or updating your accessories can make your home feel as fresh and new as a warm spring day. Here are six ways to get your home ready for the onset of spring.

Declutter and Organize

Snow isn’t the only thing that piles up over the winter. After spending so many months indoors, things tend to accumulate in our homes as well. Everything from half-finished projects, winter gear and Christmas gifts that haven’t found a home yet can add up to a messy and cluttered space. A good round of decluttering and spring cleaning is not only good for the state of your home, it’s actually good for your mental health too.

To refresh your space and your mind, use the change in seasons as an opportunity to reassess how much you own and how you store it. Ideally, everything in your home should have a purpose and a place. That might mean letting go of items you no longer use or adding storage to house the things that really matter. By removing clutter and excess items, you create the perfect backdrop for a life of purpose.

Create Colour Harmony

A spring refresh isn’t just about cleaning. It’s also about reviving your space and giving it a new look for the season. A fresh coat of paint is one of the best ways to make your home feel clean and new. The right paint colour will complement the finishes in your home and create a feeling of harmony. A cohesive colour scheme can also create flow throughout your home and make each space feel connected to the next.

Let the Light In

We know that too much sun can be harmful, but too little sun can also be detrimental to your health. Many of us don’t get enough exposure to sunlight over the winter which can lead to depression, sleep loss and brittle bones. Take full advantage of the return of long, sunny days and let as much light as possible into your home. Natural light is a wonderful resource that makes you feel better while making your space look better too!

Simple updates such as swapping out heavy window treatments for light-filtering sheers can increase the amount of light in your home. A lighter colour palette can also help make your home seem brighter and airier. You can also use strategically placed reflective surfaces to reflect light and make it seem as if there are more windows in a room.

Bring Life to Your Space

Beauty, symmetry and arts are present in nature. If we can create nature in our homes, we can lead better lives”

Just as more light makes people happier, it also makes plants happier too. If your green thumb wasn’t working very well this winter, spring is the time to try again. Introducing natural elements such as plants to indoor spaces can increase your connection to nature and improve overall wellbeing.

Incorporating more natural materials in your home can also help create a healthier home. If you’re making updates, consider replacing synthetic materials with natural elements such as wood, stone, cotton, and linen.

Look at the Bigger Picture

Even spending more time just looking at the outdoors can help improve your mood and create a connection to nature. Reconfiguring floor plans and furniture layouts to highlight views can completely change how your space feels. A reading nook that overlooks the backyard or a sitting area that focuses on a window instead of TV can help reduce feelings of stress, anger and fear.

Swap Out Textiles

Over the winter months we like to make our homes as cozy as possible. But now that the weather is warmer, it’s time to replace those faux-fur blankets and chunky knit pillows with some lighter and airier textiles.

Refresh your bedroom by switching to a lighter, brighter duvet cover and sheet set. Or try adding some floral throw pillows to bring a touch of spring to the living room. If you’re looking to make a bigger impact, changing out larger items such as curtains and area rugs can give your space a whole new look without the expense and intrusion of a renovation.
